Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues. Part 2: Purpose

Because the purpose of a gift in some sense gives us an idea of the usage and regulation, we will focus on establishing that as our foundation. Because of the nature of the giver of the gifts and His intent with them, it would be impossible to list all possible purposes of the gifts that might be applicable in specific cases. Instead we will focus on the didactic principles listed in Scripture as a means of confining our study. This paper should not be seen as an exhaustive text on the application of tongues, but should be used as a foundation and guideline for the practice of this gift.

The purposes of tongues include:

  1. Communication medium for God (1 Corinthians 14:21)
  2. It is a sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22)
  3. Build up the Church (1 Corinthians 14:5) and without interpretation builds up the person speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:4)
